Juglans nigraCOMMON: Black Walnut LEAVES: Alternate, pinnately compound, 12 to 24" long, 15 to 23 leaflets, each leaflet approx. 2 to 5" long, 1 to 2" wide, dark green, fragrant when crushed SIZE: 50 to 75' tall, and sometimes similar in width HARDINESS: Zone 4 to 9 HABIT: Upright, oval crown GROWTH RATE: Medium FLOWERS: Not significant FRUIT: Light green nuts, 1.5 to 2.0", turning black after falling to the ground SOILS: Adaptable, prefers deep, rich, moist soils, tolerates drier soils LIGHTING: Full sun USES: The tree is valuable for its wood MAINTENANCE: Reasonably trouble free, deep taproot, hard to transplant, only specific plants will grow under this tree, a natural herbicide, called juglones, is secreted from the roots and is toxic to most plants
